Be sun safe on site

The problem

Sadly and shockingly, 55% of all skin cancer patients are construction. To raise awareness and trigger action, Cancer Research UK teamed up with HSS Hire to do something about the problem.

There are already a lot of health and safety messages on building sites, so we were tasked with making one that would really stand out over the others.

Death by skin cancer

The solution

Using photochromic ink, we created specially built posters which only delivered their danger message when exposed to sunlight: a blood-red skull appearing on a featureless face as constant reminder to be sun safe on site.

Outcomes

  • Results

The poster campaign reached over 1,200 trade contractor employees in London and was picked up in national and regional press, spreading the message to the entire profession. It also set new standards of recall within the construction industry, potentially cutting the risk of trade contractor employees developing skin cancer in the future.

  • Testimonials

“A great idea for such an important cause”

    Ruth Blackwell, Cancer Research

  • Awards

The posters received great recognition for their creativity and impact and were awarded a Creative Circle Bronze awards, 4x Gold Roses awards, 1x IPA Best of Health silver, 1x PM Society Gold, 1x Creative Floor, 1x Creativepool.
